| How do I test my
microphone and speakers? |
You may follow these steps to perform a simple test
determining if your microphone and speakers are connected and adjusted
properly:
- If you are currently in a voice chat room, click Exit to leave
the room.
- Close any other programs you have open that may be using your
microphone or speakers.
- Click the Windows Start button in the lower-left corner of the
screen.
- Select Programs, then Accessories, then Multimedia
(Entertainment if you have Windows 98), then Sound Recorder.
- After the Sound Recorder window opens, click on the record button (a
red circle), say a few words into your microphone, then click the stop
button (a black square). While you are recording, you should see the sound
waves from your voice displayed on the strip chart at the top of the Sound
Recorder window.
- Click the play button (black triangle) to hear what you just recorded.
If you do not hear anything, but you saw the sound waves from your voice,
then something is wrong with your speaker setup. If you did not see the
sound waves from your voice, then something is wrong with your microphone
setup. |

| How do I adjust
my microphone and speakers? |
You may follow the steps below to perform a few simple
adjustments. It is best to adjust your settings while you are actually in a
voice chat room. After entering a voice chat room, follow these steps to
check and adjust your settings:
- Click the Windows Start button in the lower-left corner of the
screen.
- Select Programs, then Accessories, then Multimedia
(Entertainment if you have Windows 98), then Volume Control.
The Volume Control window will open and display the settings for Playback
(your speakers).
- The title of the leftmost control should be "Volume Control," "Master
Volume Control," or "Master Balance." Set the volume control so that it is
at least halfway or higher. If there is a "Mute all" checkbox, make sure
it is not checked.
- Look for the Microphone controls. If they are not displayed, select
Options from the menu, and then select Properties. At the
bottom of the Properties window, find the Microphone (or Mic) item in the
list of volume controls and place a check in the checkbox. Then, press the
OK button.
- Below the Microphone volume control, look for the checkbox labeled
"Mute" or "Select." If the checkbox is labeled "Mute," make sure it is
checked. If the checkbox is labeled "Select," make sure it is not
checked.
- Change to the Recording (microphone) settings by selecting Options
then Properties from the menu. In the Properties window, click on
the Recording option, and ensure that there is a check next to the
Microphone item in the list of volume controls at the bottom of the
window. Then press the OK button. The Volume Control window will
change to a Recording Control window.
- If the leftmost volume control is labeled "Master Record" or "Master
Recording," set the volume control so that it is at least halfway or
higher.
- Find the Microphone volume control and set it to at least halfway or
higher. If there is a checkbox labeled "Mute" below the Microphone volume
control, make sure it is not checked. If there is a checkbox
labeled "Select" below the Microphone volume control, make sure it is
checked.

| Why can some
people in the chat room hear me but others cannot? |
Possible reasons that some people cannot hear you include:
- They have used the Ignore command to block your voice and text.
- They do not have voice capability because their computer does not meet
the system requirements; they elected not to enable voice when they
entered the chat room; or there was some problem starting the voice
software on their computer.
- Someone else started speaking before you. If you speak, only that
person will hear you. Everyone else will hear that person.
If at least one person in the chat room can hear you, then your computer
is working correctly. |
| Why can't anyone
hear me? |
|
Cause: Either your microphone is not connected and
configured correctly, or the chat is having a problem accessing your
microphone.
Solution: Make sure your microphones are connected correctly. If
your Sound Recorder test is successful and you are able to record and play
back your voice, but you cannot be heard when you press the Talk
button in a chat room, check to see whether the leftmost sound level meter
(just to the right of the Talk button) moves with the level of your
voice. When your voice is louder, you should see more colored meter bars;
when your voice is softer, you should see fewer.
If the sound level meter shows the level of your voice but the other
people in the chat room cannot hear you, it is probably a problem with the
other person's speaker connection or adjustment.
If the sound level meter does not display any colored bars, or colored
bars are visible but the number does not change when the level of your voice
changes, chat is probably unable to access the microphone correctly. For
help in adjusting your computer, please read "How do I adjust my microphone
and speakers?"
|
| Why can't I hear
anyone? |
|
Cause: Either your speakers are not connected or
configured correctly, or chat is having a problem accessing them.
Solution: Make sure your speakers are connected correctly. If your
Sound Recorder test is successful and you are able to record and play back
your voice, but you cannot hear the other people when they speak in a chat
room, check to see whether the rightmost sound level meter moves when they
are speaking.
If the sound level meter does not move, it is probably a problem with the
other person's microphone connection or adjustment.
If the sound level meter does move (displays a varying number of colored
bars), verify that the mute button (a speaker icon to the right of the other
person's name) is not depressed. Try increasing the volume level by dragging
the volume slider up.
If the sound level meter displays a varying number of colored bars when
the other person is speaking, but you are unable to hear their voice, chat
is probably unable to access the speakers correctly. For help in adjusting
your computer, please read "How do I adjust my microphone and speakers?"

| Why do I hear a
tone when I press Talk? |
|
Cause: Your voice is not being sent to anyone because
there are no other participants connected to the voice server.
One of the following is true:
- You are the only one in the chat room.
- Someone else is already speaking.
- The other people in the chat room have ignored you.
- The other people are unable to connect to the voice server.
Solution: If you are the only person in the chat room, you can
always do a private voice with yourself.
|
| Why are voices
choppy and broken-up? |
|
Cause: The voice data is not passing smoothly over the
Internet. Usually, this is due to congestion or other problems at some point
between our server and the computers participating in the voice chat
conference.
Solution: Problems of this type are usually temporary, and the
voice quality should improve once the problem is remedied. If you have
persistent problems with choppy voice quality over a period of days, please
let us know of your problem so that we can diagnose whether the problem is
with your ISP, at our site, or somewhere in between.
|

Why do sounds not play on my system? |
Windows 95/98/NT users running versions of Java prior to 1.2 (including all
current versions of Microsoft Java, Internet Explorer and Netscape
Navigator/Communicator) will not be able to hear sound, due to a bug in these
earlier Java releases that caused Windows to crash after repeated playing of
sound. You must upgrade to Sun's JRE 1.2 or higher to hear sound on Windows.
In addition, there is a bug in Netscape Communicator 4.5 for Macintosh that
prevents it from playing sound from Java applets.
We have notified Netscape of this error, though at present, they have not
addressed the problem.

| What do I need to
use voice chat? |
|
Voice Chat feature requires the following:
|
| How do
I install voice chat on my computer? |
|
If your computer is running Microsoft Windows and you are
using either Netscape (version 5.0 or later) or Internet Explorer (version
5.0 or later), the voice chat software will automatically install when you
enter a chat room. |
| Why don't I see
any voice controls? |
|
Cause: Your computer does not meet the minimum
requirements for our voice feature.
Solution: You must use Microsoft Windows. The Apple Macintosh and
other non-Windows platforms don't currently support our voice feature. You
must be running either Netscape Navigator/Communicator (version 5.0 or
later) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or later). To check the
version number of your browser, select the About Navigator...,
About Communicator..., or About Internet Explorer item from the
browser's Help menu. If you have an older version of Netscape or
Internet Explorer, download a new version of your browser.
Cause: You have not changed your Chat software selection to
Voice.
Solution: Go to the chat welcome page and select Enable Voice.
Cause: You have turned off the voice feature by pressing the
Stop Voice button.
Solution: Press the Start Voice button to reactivate the
voice feature. This button should be Red for your vocie control to work.
Cause: The voice-enabled chat software failed to install.
Solution: If your whole chat display area is blank and you do not
see the normal chat application, follow one of the steps below to fix this
problem:
1. In Internet Explorer, display the Internet Options window. If you have
Internet Explorer version 4, choose View -> Internet Options
from the browser's menu. If you have Internet Explorer version 5, choose
Tools -> Internet Options from the browser's menu.
After the Internet Options window is displayed, press the
Settings... button in the center Temporary Internet Files section
of the window. On the Settings window that is displayed, press the View
Objects... button. The Downloaded Program Files window is displayed.
Remove any versions of "GlassRoomVoiceControl" that are listed by
clicking on the name using the right mouse button and selecting Remove
from the menu that is displayed. You will be prompted to confirm your
choice. Make sure the chat window is closed before you attempt to do
this!
After you have removed the old software, press Cancel in each of
the windows to close them, then try to enter a voice chat room.
And then restart Internet Explorer
2. If you can not access the Internet Explorer menu for any reason,
follow the steps below:
- Close the chat window
- Go to your "Start" menu and choose "Run."
- Type in "downloaded program files" (with the quotation
marks), and hit the "Enter" key.
- Locate a file called "GlassRoomVoiceControl".
- Right-click on the file and choose "Remove."
- Restart Internet Explorer.
Start the chat room again. You'll see a window asking you if you want to
install the GlassRoom Voice Control. Make sure you answer Yes to this
question! You now should have the voice menu available in the chat window.
|
| Why is voice not
supported on my configuration? |
Cause: Your computer does not meet the minimum
requirements for the voice chat:
- Netscape Navigator (version 5.0 or higher)
or
- Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or higher)
If you need a newer version of your Internet browser, download the latest
version of
Internet Explorer from Microsoft or
Netscape.
